Guernsey jumpers from Le Tricoteur are crafted to last and last. If you’re wondering how to look after your guernsey jumper through the decades, we’ve compiled some essential tips and tricks to keep your garment in perfect condition.
How to Wash Guernsey Wool
First of all you do not need to wash a guernsey that often. The wool has amazing anti-microbial properties which means it self cleans. It doesn't easily pick up body odour & even if you cook a fragrant curry - you could simply air it and the smell disperses very quickly. Really and Truly, we may wash ours about every 4-5 years.
Can I wash wool in the machine?
While you technically can, we don’t really recommend it. Instead, all our Le Tricoteur knitwear is best hand washed in warm water (not hot) with a detergent specifically designed for wool.
Steps for Hand Washing Your Guernsey Jumper:
- Fill a Basin: Use lukewarm water and add a wool-specific detergent.
- Soak Gently: Immerse the jumper and give it a good "agitate" swishing it around by hand, without rubbing or wringing the fabric.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. DO NOT add softener as you want the natural lanolin to be the hero. Repeat until the water runs clear.
- Gentle Spin Dry: To remove excess water, you can use a washing machine’s spin cycle on a gentle setting (no more than 600 RPM) as a sodden guernsey is very heavy.
- Dry Flat: Spread the jumper out flat on a clean towel, reshaping it as necessary. Avoid direct sunlight and never drape it over a radiator or hanger, as this can distort the shape and make it stretch weirdly on the shoulders.
How to Dry Your Guernsey Jumper
Traditional Drying Method: Back in the day, guernsey jumpers were often draped over shady hedgerows to dry. You can replicate this by laying your jumper flat on a drying rack in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
Modern Alternatives: If you prefer, dry-cleaning is also an option. Additionally, to freshen up your jumper and kill bacteria, place it in a large ziplock bag and put it in the freezer overnight. This is also an anti-moth method as it kills the larvae. But you would leave it in there for a week just to be sure.
Looking After Wool
Wool is a remarkable material that doesn’t need to be washed as frequently as synthetic fibres. It self-regulates moisture levels, preventing the build-up of bacteria and odours. Here are some wool care tips to keep your guernsey jumper in top shape:
- Rotate Wear: Due to their reversible design, you can wear your Le Tricoteur jumper front-to-back and back-to-front on rotation. We recommend it.
- Avoid Hangers: Never hang your guernsey jumper. Store it folded to prevent the natural yarn from stretching. See the folding method here
- Moth Prevention: Use cedar wood balls in your storage area to deter moths from feasting on your wool garments.
- Repair Services: Should your jumper become frayed or damaged, we offer a mending service. Simply send us a photo with a description of the required repairs and we will be back in touch asap. Get in touch here.
Are Guernsey Jumpers Itchy?
Some may find that guernsey sweaters can be a little itchy. Many choose to wear a collared shirt or a long-sleeved top as a barrier beneath their jumper, or a bandana or scarf at the neck. You could also try this ‘hack’ for softening the fibres. It is the only time we would recommend using a bit of fabric softener
- Turn your guernsey inside out and submerge in cold water making sure it's totally absorbed and then drain it and press out the excess water.
- While the jumper is just damp, massage it very gently with good quality hair or fabric conditioner. Kind of pat it in and certainly avoid stretching out the garment.
- Give the conditioner 30 minutes to set on the jumper, and then rinse it with cold water.
- Place the jumper on a towel and let it dry flat.
- When it's dry, fold and place into a large ziplock & place in the freezer overnight, In the morning, it won't itch anymore! (We haven't tried this step yet, but have done it for moths, so we know it won't damage your garment. Please feel free to feed back on this method)
The conditioner apparently makes the fibres in the jumper relax a bit (although we love worsted wool for its wind proofing capabilities because they are twisted in a certain way to make them so effective)
Are Guernsey Jumpers Waterproof?
While guernsey jumpers are highly water-resistant due to their tight knit and the wool we use, they are not completely waterproof. This makes them ideal for repelling light rain and wind. It can enjoyable to watch the droplets of water in a light rain shower form on your guernsey but they should not be used as a substitute for a waterproof jacket in heavy downpours. They are perfect for sea mist and a light drizzle.
Can I Wash a Guernsey Sweater in the Machine?
As mentioned, washing Guernsey wool in the machine is not hugely recommended. However, some brave customers have been known to use a very gentle wool wash cycle with cold water and minimal agitation. But the best method remains hand washing to ensure the longevity and quality of the jumper.
By following these wool care guidelines, you can maintain the quality and durability of your guernsey jumper for decades.
