How To Size Your Guernsey Jumper

Nov 12, 2024

If you’re considering a traditional guernsey jumper, it’s important to choose the right size to get the perfect fit. Our guernsey jumpers are made from 100% worsted wool with a tighter-than-normal knitted construction, which provides a snug fit while maintaining the jumper’s shape over time. Here’s a guide to help you select the best size, so you can get the very most out of the warmth and timeless design of your guernsey jumper.

How Should My Guernsey Fit?

Unlike regular sweaters, guernsey jumpers are crafted with a snugger fit due to the number of stitches per inch (thanks to our vintage flatbed knitting machines, which have more needles in the bed than a modern machine). This tighter fit helps the jumper retain its shape, but it also means it’s best not to buy your exact chest measurement. Instead, allow for a bit of room to achieve a fit that’s comfortable and functional.

What Size Should I Buy? / How to Size a Guernsey Jumper?

To find the right size, we recommend following some of these steps:

  1. Measure a Sweater You Already Like:
Lay it flat and measure from armpit to armpit in inches
Then Double That Number. This doubled measurement is a good starting point for your guernsey size in inches.
  2. Adjust According to Fit Preference:
For a slim, traditional fit we say add +2 inches to your widest body measurement (chest, shoulders, or bust). Make sure you measure your chest using a soft tailors measuring tape and not over a lot of layers.  For a roomier fit (ideal if you’re planning to layer or prefer a baggier sweatshirt style fit) add +4 inches.

Traditional Woollen Jumpers for Men and Women

Our guernsey jumpers are unisex, so the same style fits both men and women. Sizes are based on chest measurements in inches, so there’s no need to worry about standard size labels like XS, S, M, etc. Simply follow the inch-based guide above to find the size that suits you best. Our sizes range from Small (34 inches, often an XXS for Men) to XXXL (54-58 inches) Please note any larger sizes than 52" may have to be made to order

Unique Features of Our Guernsey Jumpers

  • Body and Arm Lengths: Designed as working garments, guernsey jumpers have a slightly longer body for added warmth and functionality; Ranging from 25” for size 36 up to 29” for sizes 42 and above. Traditionally the longer "seat" of the guernsey could be used for leaning on and the "apron" for leaning over the side of the boat. Sleeve lengths vary as well, with longer sleeves that can be folded over and cuffed if needed.

  • Cropped Style: Our cropped, off-shoulder design is available in a one-size-fits-all (50" wide) with a dropped shoulder, offering a more relaxed, 'trapeze' style fit and is shorter so that it skims the hips. It is very flattering on the female body and fits most dress sizes (all the staff at Le Tricoteur span between a size 8 and a 20 and we all wear it well) Also very suitable for men wanting the Japanese boxy shape.

How to Wear a Guernsey Jumper

A Guernsey jumper can be styled in various ways for a timeless look:

  • Traditional Fit: Wear it snugly over a base layer for an authentic, warm feel.

  • Layered Look: For a modern twist, layer your guernsey over a turtleneck or button-down shirt, choosing a size that gives you extra room.

For those who prefer metric measurements, refer to our size chart in our FAQs for easy conversions. Remember, for a classic Guernsey look, sizing up by +2 or +4 inches will give you the best fit.
