Our Story - The History of Le Tricoteur

Robert's wife to be, Suzette Carey joined in 1968 & two old hand knitting machines were purchased to knit sleeves so that the machine at 5 Lower Vauvert could concentrate on bodies. Due to the closeness of the knit, these machines were hard work to operate, and two burly off-duty policemen were duly recruited to operate them.

In 1969/70 the first new fully automatic knitting machine was imported from Germany and further premises (a long narrow shed) was rented at 4 Havilland Street. Another new machine was installed soon after.

In 1971 a retail outlet at 35 Commercial Arcade was rented with a flat above where Robert & Suzette lived for a time. They were lean as a whippet in those days, running between the properties!
