SS 2025 Knitwear Trends: Fisherman Core

Mar 7, 2025

Search #fishermancore across TikTok, Instagram or Pinterest and feeds are awash with chunky cable-knit jumpers, nautical stripes, fisherman sandals and knitted beanies.

Pinterest Predicts 2025 hailed fisherman core as one of the key trends for Spring Summer 2025, and we've even seen major fashion brands embracing the look with Prada showcasing a navy guernsey in their SS2025 presentation and Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu incorporating the theme into their AW2025 shows.

What is fisherman core?

This trend is all about blending traditional nautical and fisherman-inspired clothing with a fashionable, sustainable edge. Think knitted sweaters, wool beanies, waxed jackets and Breton stripes and embracing natural fabrics, heritage brands and traditional manufacturing methods to achieve garments that are hard-wearing and practical.

Why fisherman core?

The trend is a continuation of the move towards work-wear and functional fashion that is comfortable, practical and hard-wearing. With heightened awareness of less ethical practices amongst fast-fashion retailers, #fishermancore brings a focus on sustainability, supporting local businesses and slow fashion. Heritage and tradition play a key role.

Consumers are embracing a more eco-friendly lifestyle, choosing clothing that not only looks good, but is a better choice for the planet. Natural, sustainable materials that are designed to withstand the elements make fisherman clothing an obvious choice for those seeking timeless staples with a nautical edge.

The original guernsey from Guernsey

The authentic fisherman’s sweater from the Channel Islands, the Le Tricoteur guernsey is characteristically durable and functional. Manufactured using 100% worsted British wool, the tightly knitted stitches produce a finish that is not only warm, but repels water, which is why it has been favoured by fishermen and sailors for hundreds of years.

British wool and sustainability

Le Tricoteur has been buying British Wool from the same UK yarn mill for many years. Wool is a great insulator, reacting to changes in body temperature, keeping you warm when the weather is cold and cool when it’s hot. Its hollow crimped fibres wick away hear or retain it, whatever is needed.

British wool is an obvious choice for eco-conscious consumers since it is a sustainable fabric, it is renewable, biodegradable and supports British farmers.

How to style the fisherman aesthetic?

Classic Navy

The original guernsey colour and our best seller by far. Whether it’s the traditional shape or the more modern silhouette of the drop-shoulder cropped guernsey, nothing beats navy for embracing the true fisherman aesthetic.

Nautical stripes

Stripes will always go hand in hand with maritime-inspired style. Navy or red striped with aran has the timeless appeal of a classic breton sweater, while a bright kelly green and indigo blue stripe makes more of a bold statement.

Earthy colour palette

The palette for this nautical aesthetic includes warm earthy tones such as green and beige, so our oatmeal, military green and mallard knitted guernseys fit the bill perfectly. Available in the cropped style only and manufactured in undyed yarn, aran provides an authentic yet striking alternative, perfect for the Spring/Summer season.

Knitted beanies

A staple in the fishermancore kit, a knitted wool beanie, or watch cap, would traditionally be rolled up to leave the fisherman’s ears clear to prevent over-heating. In our case, we designed the ‘Dobbo’ hat so that our postman Dobbo could listen out for traffic while on his rounds.

For comfort, practicality and a timeless style that feels effortlessly cool while also embodying a collective shift towards supporting small businesses and sustainability, we can see why the fishermancore trend appeals.

All predictions point to it being a look we’ll be seeing a lot more of into the warmer months.
