Care Advice for Guernsey Jumpers

How do I look after my guernsey jumper?

Our Le Tricoteur guernsey jumpers are made to last. A little care will help keep it looking and feeling its best for years to come.

Knitted with a tight construction on our vintage knitting machines, our traditional wool guernsey jumpers offer warmth and protection from the elements.

Wool doesn’t need frequent washing. Try airing your jumper between wears to freshen it up, and wash it only when needed.

The traditional guernsey jumper design can be worn either way round. We recommend alternating the front and back to help distribute wear evenly.

Store your jumper folded rather than on a hanger. Our guernsey wool jumpers are around 1kg or 2.2 lbs in weight. If you use a hanger this can stretch the wool and affect its shape.

To help protect against moth damage, store your guernsey jumper clean and dry, and consider using cedarwood balls alongside it.

Can my guernsey jumper be repaired?

We use premium 100% worsted wool and hand-finish every garment. If your Le Tricoteur guernsey jumper becomes frayed, comes unstitched or needs a little attention, we offer a repair service to help give it a new lease of life.

How do I wash my guernsey jumper?

Wool guernseys rarely need washing. When yours does, we recommend hand washing rather than machine washing.

Use lukewarm water and a detergent specifically designed for wool. Wash gently without rubbing or wringing, then rinse thoroughly.

Gently remove excess water and reshape your jumper before laying it flat to dry. Keep it away from direct sunlight and radiators, and don’t hang it up while wet.

Historically, guernseys were sometimes laid over shady hedgerows to dry. At home, a flat drying surface is a more practical choice.

If you prefer, our wool knitwear can also be dry-cleaned.
